Why AgenticReality

Every agent operates in a reality vacuum. It does not know whether it is running in production or a test sandbox. It cannot feel whether memory is plentiful or dangerously low. It has no awareness of neighboring services, no sense of what time means in the user's context, and no perception of the consequences its actions carry.

The current fixes do not work. Environment variables give you a handful of static strings -- never a living sense of context. Health checks tell you if a service is up -- never what the topology looks like or how the agent fits into it. Monitoring dashboards show metrics to humans -- never to the agent that needs them most.

Current AI: Operates blind to its own operational reality. AgenticReality: Knows WHERE it exists, WHAT it has, and WHAT is at stake -- and adjusts behavior accordingly.

AgenticReality provides operational context awareness -- a living model of the agent's deployment, resources, reality layers, topology, temporal grounding, stakes, and coherence that evolves with every sensing cycle, detects context shifts automatically, tracks incarnation history across restarts, maps the service mesh it inhabits, and grounds every claim against verified reality anchors.

Problems Solved (Read This First)

  • Problem: AI agents do not know if they are in production or test. Solved: deployment consciousness with DeploymentSoul tracks environment tier, substrate, and incarnation identity -- the agent always knows where it lives.
  • Problem: agents cannot feel resource pressure building. Solved: resource proprioception with ResourceBody provides memory, CPU, network, and storage awareness with pressure gradients, so the agent can throttle before failure.
  • Problem: agents treat all data as equally trustworthy. Solved: reality layers and reality anchors distinguish verified ground truth from cached data from inferred claims, with freshness tracking on every layer.
  • Problem: agents cannot detect their own hallucinations. Solved: hallucination detection scores unverified claims against reality anchors, flagging statements with no grounding evidence.

AgenticReality is a Rust-native reality engine that treats operational context as first-class data. Deployments have souls. Resources have bodies. Reality has layers. Stakes have weight.

The engine begins with Init, creating a deployment soul and resource body. Sense polls the environment and resources. Ground verifies claims against reality anchors. Assess evaluates stakes and risk fields. Cohere checks all seven domains for consistency. Persist writes the .areal file. When a context shift is detected (deployment change, resource spike, topology mutation), the cycle restarts automatically.

Reality Physics

Not all data is equally real. AgenticReality treats reality as a layered system where each piece of information has a trust level, a freshness window, and a grounding status.

Reality Layers

Every piece of context the agent encounters is assigned to a reality layer. The layers form a hierarchy of trustworthiness:

Layer hierarchy: Ground Truth (verified right now) > Verified State (checked recently) > Cached State (stale but once verified) > Inferred (never directly verified). The agent knows the difference. Every decision can check the layer of the data it depends on.

Freshness Perception

Data decays. A database latency measurement from 2 seconds ago is trustworthy. The same measurement from 47 minutes ago is suspect. AgenticReality tracks freshness on every piece of context and warns when decisions depend on stale data.

Reality Anchors

Reality anchors are verified ground truths that other claims can be checked against. When the agent makes a claim ("the database is healthy"), it can be grounded against the nearest anchor ("database latency was 12ms at timestamp T, verified via health check").

Hallucination Detection

When the agent makes a statement that has no reality anchor and no verified evidence, the hallucination detector flags it. This is not about catching lies -- it is about catching ungrounded confidence.

Stakes Perception

Not all requests are equally consequential. Deleting a test file is low stakes. Deploying to production on a Friday afternoon during peak traffic is extremely high stakes. AgenticReality gives agents the ability to perceive the weight of their actions.

Risk Field Perception

Risk fields map how danger propagates through the service mesh. A change to the authentication service has a different risk field than a change to the logging service.

The .areal File Format

The .areal format is a custom binary format with integrity protection and optional encryption. One file holds the entire reality state -- portable, tamper-evident, and designed for long-term persistence across incarnations.

Integrity Guarantees

  • BLAKE3 checksums verify file integrity on every read. Any corruption or tampering is detected immediately.
  • LZ4 per-section compression keeps file size small while allowing fast random access to individual domains.
  • Atomic writes use temp-file-plus-rename to prevent partial writes from corrupting data. A crash mid-write leaves the previous valid file intact.
  • Optional AES-256-GCM encryption protects sensitive deployment data at rest.

Deployment Model

  • Standalone by default: AgenticReality is independently installable and operable. Integration with AgenticTime, AgenticContract, or AgenticIdentity is optional, never required.
  • Bridges available: Optional bridge traits connect reality state to time, identity, memory, cognition, and other sister systems.
  • NoOp fallbacks: Every bridge trait has a NoOp default implementation. The agent runs at full capability even with zero sisters installed.

Privacy and Security

AgenticReality handles sensitive operational data: deployment topology, resource utilization, network structure, and incarnation history. This demands careful handling.

Four Privacy Principles

  1. Local by default -- All sensing, grounding, and assessment happens on the local machine. No data leaves the host unless the user explicitly configures remote storage or telemetry. The .areal file stays on disk.

  2. Transparency is absolute -- Every reality layer, anchor, and assessment is visible to the user. There is no hidden scoring or secret classification. areal soul summary shows everything the system knows about its operational context.

  3. Minimal sensing -- The engine only senses what it needs. Resource polling reads system metrics but never inspects file contents, network traffic payloads, or user data. Topology mapping uses service health endpoints, never packet inspection.

  4. Data is ephemeral by choice -- Incarnation memory can be cleared at any time. Anchors can be deleted. The entire .areal file can be destroyed with no side effects. Deletion is real deletion.

This is not a prototype. It is tested, benchmarked, and hardened.
