The new GAMM activity group RSE & RDM in Mathematics and Mechanics was formally approved at the GAMM Annual Meeting in April 2025, thus establishing the institutional anchoring of the topics Research Software Engineering (RSE) and Research Data Management (RDM) within GAMM. The committee's goal is to provide a common platform for the often scattered activities related to software development and research data in mathematics and mechanics, to promote exchange between individuals
and groups, and to identify and address GAMM-specific infrastructure and support needs. The [official website](https://gammag-rse-rdm.github.io/) set up for this purpose already serves as a central point of contact for information and coordination within the community.

On December 4 and 5, 2025, the Technical University of Braunschweig hosted the kickoff meeting of the activity group —the first major gathering of interested parties from the fields of mathematics, mechanics, RSE, and RDM. Around 40 participants from various institutions traveled to the event to discuss the requirements, opportunities, and challenges of sustainable research software and data-conscious research work. Among others, renowned speakers—such as [Philipp Birken](https://www.maths.lu.se/english/research/staff/philipp-birken/) (University of Lund) and [Jörg Unger](https://www.bam.de/Navigation/DE/Ueber-die-BAM/Organisation/Praesident/Abteilung-7/fachbereich-77/fachbereich77.html) (BAM)—gave presentations that provided important impetus for the committee's orientation. The constructive exchange clearly showed that there is both a need and enthusiasm for this topic. Parallel to the preparation of the kickoff meeting, an article was also written for the first 2026 issue of the [GAMM Rundbrief](https://www.gamm.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/GAMM_1-26-web.pdf) (p. 4ff, see also [Zenodo DOI](https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18888653) for an English translation) to raise awareness of the topic of RSE.

This marks a promising start for our new activity group—with a clear structure, initial visible results, and a growing community of committed individuals. The activity group is planning further steps for the coming months: A [second annual
meeting](https://events.hifis.net/event/3698/) is set to take place in November (in Cologne) to continue the discussions that have begun and to plan the next developments together. In addition, we would like to establish interactive formats such as World Cafés or Appreciative Inquiries in order to systematically identify the needs of the community and relevant stakeholders — for example, in relation to software infrastructure, data management, or training opportunities. At the same time, we intend to promote the establishment of permanent communication channels, such as mailing lists, newsletters, or moderated forums, to enable members and interested parties to network regularly. Another key goal is to integrate the committee into the supraregional RSE and RDM ecosystem in Germany — we are seeking cooperation and links with initiatives
such as the [NFDI](https://nfdi.de), the Community [de‑RSE](https://de-rse.org/), and the [RSE specialist group of the German Informatics Society (GI)](https://fg-rse.gi.de/). This road-map is intended to ensure that the GAMM activity group RSE & RDM does not remain merely a symbol, but becomes an active and sustainable engine for high-quality, reproducible, and versatile research in mathematics and mechanics — supported by a vibrant community.
