Pressing [Enter] produces no response

I have to press [Shift + Enter] to break lines in *plain* and *markdown* modes, or to create a new paragraph in *formatted* mode. 

Also, a minor issue—I'm not sure if it's a spacing or font problem, but the dashes——won't connect properly.
